Re: Why did you become a volunteer?

I played volunteer for a short period, only long enough to cert. and test and was fortunate enough to get picked up full time.I say palyed vollie because I don't want to come across like I have the slightest experiance bieng a vollie.Being on the west coast we don't see very much vollie stuff anymore, but I think it's great for anyone that's doing the job for the right reasons wether you're getting paid or not. I just wanted to post in contrary to sheshifter, it's my opinion he is off on this topic and has used some things out of context. Firefighting is a personality, not one in particular, but still a personality. You have it or you don't, the fact that you get a pay check  or not, does not change this. It's all about the right mind set, continuing education, and of course actually running the calls for true experiance it should never be the difference in the dollars. Sorry to continue this hijacked thread.

I agree with the personality mindset.  I lived in base housing for many years.  when I bought a house and moved into O'Fallon I wanted to serve in my community.  I didn't even know we had a volunteer dept, I thought they were paid.  I was suprised to find out we had a volunteer dept, and already being an EMT from my AF training, thought I could be an asset.  Went up for drill night, filled out an application.  Once I started getting involved and trained I was hooked.  I love the fire service, my dept, and the fact I do it as a volunteer.

    sheshifter killer:
Well I figured I'd chime in here, I started as a "Vollie", I worked for a few years while I went to school and certified. During this time I learned that the true professionals are paid, not playing firefighter. I then spent all of my time preparing for my testing and future career as a FT.
I've sat back and read the posts from possers like FED Q, about how bad ass he thinks he is...I think your a dumb dick that wishes he was like "Dad and Bro". I don't think you would make a pimple on a paid guys ass. The reality of it is...your not good enough...otherwise you would have a FT job!
My thought is that if you truly love this job you would strive to make that full time position, you would promote the tradition of what it is that we do, not just wear a T-Shirt and have a really cool story to tell your girlfriend, she ain't gonna give you any anyway...she's with a professional firefighter!
Being a professional firefighter means we take care of each other and defend our profession...FTM, RFB...We don't spend our time bragging about ourselves or sucking the chief's dick in the hopes of getting something out of it (no pun intended). Considering that I've seen both sides, I can say all this with no issues. In fairness to all those "Vollies" out there that want, and pursue the dream of being a real firefighter...Good luck...I do believe that volunteers can make good paid guys, but if you do it at the expense of my FT brothers (IAFF brothers/sister)...Fuck you!
and he wrote this on the forum, Volunteer's Corner. wow

A bold statement considering most of this country is covered by volunteers. Last time I checked...weren't we all on the same side with the same common goal? Or are career guys really that different from volunteers?

We have a unique situation here in Evansville. Since we work so closely with the career city guys (our response areas overlap) - we take every single opportunity to train and learn from them. And most of those guys will be the first to admit that they learn from us. I aspire to be a career firefighter one day. But to pass up an opportunity to make a difference in a local community by doing your best, receiving training, and by actually responding to calls (the best way to learn, I would wager) - someone would have to be stupid.

In my department I find the most dedicated, genuine, and hardest-working firefighters and EMT's that I know. It doesn't hurt to get paid - we all need to make a living. But (don't tell the payroll guys) - I'll always gladly do it for free.

    Just my two cents.

...by the way...why is it always a "penny for your thoughts" but you gotta put your "two cents in"?

    ...somebody's making a penny...

Re: Why did you become a volunteer?

Well said big D. As a volunteer myself, I know the members of my department take firefighting very seriously. A structure fire does not care if you come knocking for free or if you make a living kicking it's ass. We all strive to do our best, and be safe. This is a great site and I am proud to be a firefighter.

You don't deserve the right to use the F.O.O.L.S. signature on your post you total piece of shit. You can't hang with the F.O.O.L.S.  You took FF2 once and now you are god to firefighters you asshole? WTF?  Are you RIT ? Please tell me all the trainings you keep up on SHESHIFTER tell me how fucking badass you are come on please... You need to get the hell out and come back when you fucking grow up u non trained fuck. The IAFF needs to throw your ass out. Some of the vollies will smoke your ass with trainging so put your shit where it counts TRAINING. If you train like you talk badass you might impress me but I know your type - I never have to train again because i'm in it for the 30 and out trip. Keep the  FTM-PTB-EGH-RFB-KTF-DTRT off your vocabulary asshole until you truely know what they stand for. hope you fucking die you dumb bitch.
